Gippsland Symphony Orchestra - Mendelssohn

Felix Mendelssohn rightly takes his place in the pantheon of Classical Music greats; a virtuosic instrumentalist and composer is clearly one of the most important German composers of all time. His music faultlessly combines the expressive elements of Romantic music with the clarity of Classical music. He was responsible for the re-emergence of interest in the music of J.S. Bach, a legacy beyond comprehension to musicians around the world. Imagine a world without Bach? Mendelssohn was a prolific composer and during his short life he composed significant works in all styles, particularly his Symphonies and Overtures. He wrote two Oratorios Elijah and St Paul and many songs and a collection of String Symphonies. His compositions are perfectly reflecting the artistic attitude of his time, clarity, balance, and discipline. Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Opus 21Mendelssohn adored the writing of Shakespeare and the Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream was written when he was 17 years old. He orchestrated and this demonstrated the precocious talent he had. The overture perfectly captures the works of faires, Oberon, Tatiana, and the myriad of characters that Shakespeare created. Symphony No. 4 in A Major, op. 90 (“Italian”)He toured extensively and on a visit to Italy he went to Rome, Naples, Venice and Florence and this trip had an impression on him. He spoke with great enthusiasm about his trip and took inspiration and stimulation from his time in Italy. In a letter he wrote to his sister he spoke effusively of the Symphony No 4 as the “happiest piece I have ever written”. He dubbed this symphony the Italian and on its premiere performance received great acclaim and is considered by many as being the ’perfect’ symphony. Ironically, it was in 1851 that it was published for the first time, some four years after his death. String SymphoniesMendelssohn wrote thirteen string symphonies between 1821 and 1823 (age 12 to 14) The symphonies are mirrors to the masterworks of Haydn, J.C. Bach, C.P.E Bach and Mozart. These symphonies are mature beyond the young years of the composer and point to the brilliance of his later symphonic works, in these work he experimented with three, four and five movement forms and No 10 and 13 are in one continuous movement. A form he adopted for the famous Violin Concerto.

Jeff Duff and the Great Southern Band

Jeff Duff is arguably the most flamboyant, creative and controversial entertainer Australia has produced. His musical gifts and fantastical androgynous performances parallel the artistry of David Bowie. While Duffo’s career kicked off in the 1970s, he continues to grow as an artist, creating new music and performing sell-out concerts to this day.  Around the same time that David Bowie was wowing audiences in London with his theatrical performances, Australia’s very own glam rocker, Jeff Duff, was also blazing a similar path downunder. Jeff, fresh out of art school was experimenting with outrageous stage costumes and androgynous make-up with his band Kush; much to the delight of Aussie audiences.  This was the seventies and Duffo soon gained critical acclaim, not only for his unique performances, but for his rich baritone voice. On the strength of Jeff’s stage persona and his band’s amazing musicianship, Kush soon became one of the hottest bands in Australia. At the time, the band’s hit single ‘Living on Easy Street’ and the album ‘Snow White and the Straight Eights’ soon followed, cemented Jeff and Kush as one of the hottest bands in Australia. Duffo has never swayed far from those early musical roots, as evidenced by his new lineup ‘Jeff Duff & the Great Southern Band’. This powerful new line-up which features some of Australia’s finest players, perform dynamic arrangements from ‘Kush’, ‘Blood Sweat & Tears’ ‘Chicago’ and includes an epic version of ‘MacArthur Park’ which never fails to bring the house down!

Gippsland Symphony Orchestra - Enigma

Enigma Variations – Edward Elgar “Something might be made of it’ and with these immortal words one of the most admired and acclaimed piece of music began. Edward Elgar, whilst playing the piano one night after a day of teaching stumbled upon the thematic idea of his most famous piece the Enigma Variations. He started to play the theme in variations saying to his wife Alice, Powell (Variation II) would do this, or Nevison (Variation XII)would do it like this. Elgar himself describe it as being ‘commenced in a spirit of humour and continued deep seriousness’ and he proceeded to compose fourteen variations of the theme all dedicated to his friends and of course Alice, his wife. Much has been made about the Enigma but Elgar wrote “The enigma I will not explain—its ‘dark saying’ must be left unguessed, and I warn you that the apparent connection between the Variations and the Theme is often of the slightest texture; further, through and over the whole set another and larger theme ‘goes,’ but is not played—so the principal Theme never appears. . . .” Many have pondered what the Enigma is however, what isn’t in dispute is that the Enigma Variations is a classical music masterpiece. English Folk Song Suite – Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872 – 1958) Vaughan Williams, like Elgar was a profoundly proud British composer. He was born and grew up in the Gloucestershire where he had an idyllic childhood. He is a famous military band composer and his English Folk Song Suite, which he composed in 1923 has become a cornerstone of the military band repertoire. The suite was originally commissioned by the Royal Military School of Music and was titled Folk Song Suite, he added the ‘English’ dedication after he had orchestrated it for full orchestra. The suite is a collection of folk songs from Norfolk and Somerset including Seventeen Come Sunday, Pretty Caroline, Green Bushes, Blow Away the Morning Dew to name a few. The form is March, Intermezzo and March and it originally had a fourth movement which the composer removed from the suite and published that as a separate work. A Fugal Overture – Gustav Holst (1874 – 1934) Holst shares some traits with Ralph Vaughan Williams, both born in Gloucestershire, and both shared a love of English folk music. Holst was a composer, trombonist, arranger, and teacher. His best-known orchestral piece is The Plants Suite however he composed over a wide range of genres and styles. His initial influence come from the works of Wagner and Strauss however once the revival in interest of English folksongs he developed his style of composition. He was a teacher, in the words of his colleague Vaughan Williams, a great one and built a strong music ethos at Morley College. His Fugal Overture is an expansive exploration of the Fugal form. The piece begins with a repetitive rhythmic motif which gives way to the main theme in the cello and basses. From the outset this is a riotous journey for all members of the orchestra. A wide ride that pleases on all fronts.

Chocolate Starfish - Bat Out Of Hell

Bat Out of Hell – the album and show that kicked off Chocolate Starfish’s acclaimed Classic Album Series – is back in 2023 by overwhelming demand, after reigniting the stage at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre in 2022. The exhilarating show features the full Bat Out of Hell album, plus classic songs by the master himself, Jim Steinman, then capped off with Chocolate Starfish hits. Australia’s most entertaining rock band continues to live up to its reputation with this spectacular selection of songs honoured in true Starfish style. Just as they put their own slant on Carly Simon’s You’re So Vain, the ’Fish approach each song with their trademark intensity and revelry that elevates the experience well beyond a tribute. With a nod to the original and a glint in their eyes, they imbue the songs with their signature flair and theatrics. Chocolate Starfish has enthralled audiences with the Classic Album Series since its inception in 2015 with Bat Out of Hell and the band are ‘all revved up’ to return to the series’ roots. Lead singer Adam Thompson says that in revisiting the full album show, he hopes to share the impact the Bat Out of Hell album had on him with audiences. “The first time I heard Bat Out of Hell, I was 13 and had little musical influence outside a conservative regional radio station,” he recalls. “Bat Out of Hell songs and Meat Loaf’s voice transported me out of that country isolation and into a fantasy world of sonic ear candy I didn’t know existed. Soaring hook-laden melodies, and adjective-filled lyrics around life, death, girls, cars and motorbikes, was everything a trapped teenaged boy could imagine outside his small world. On top of that, each song was an epic of dynamic proportions, and it shaped the theatrical and dynamic way I looked at song writing and performance ever since.” Chocolate Starfish powered on to the Australian music scene in the early 1990s and quickly established themselves as an influential force with their cover of Carly Simon’s You’re So Vain, original hit Mountain and perennial favourite Four Letter Word. They wholeheartedly earned their reputation as one of Australia’s best live bands of the 90s, boasting two Top 10 albums and six Top 50 singles, and received an Australian Music Award for ‘Most Popular Album’ at the 1994 Australian Music Awards. Twenty-nine years later, the band is living up to this reputation and then some as they continue to delight long-time fans and win over new ones. With a new album in tow and plenty of fuel in the tank, the ’Fish show no signs of slowing down. The Bat Out of Hell Tour promises audiences what they know and love about a Chocolate Starfish show – pure, unadulterated entertainment…and, as always, a few surprises.
